outdoor sofa…

before i even get started with this, i will say that this project isn’t quite finished yet… so there will be a “part two” to this outdoor sofa project…

when we bought out home, one of the things i absolutely wanted was the extended patio… and even though it was ridiculously expensive for just adding some concrete, i knew it was something i wanted… and now that i have it, i had to come up with a way to use it… i have big plans for that space, but i’ll have to file some of that in the “someday” category… but for now, at least i have part of it done…

i love the look of this sofa… so i picked up some 2×4 boards, some wood glue, and some exterior wood screws – and got to work…

following the plans on the linked site, it took me almost no time to build this baby… and it turned out pretty nicely….

(pay no attention to the legs hanging from the workbench… nothing to see there)….

while working on the sofa, i met this guy:

that was an uncomfortable meeting for both of us… the drama that surrounded this little guy was quite impressive… it started with me freaking out… then i had my daughter get the broom (because i needed a long stick to knock him off of there!)… she ran to get me the broom while i kept a watchful eye on him… before handing me the broom, she insisted i tell her my plan… (i think she just wanted to make sure i actually HAD a plan)… i told her i was going to use the broom to knock him (and the wood) to the floor… then, during the commotion, i would smash him with the broom… she apprehensively approved my plan, but said she wanted to watch it from the hood of my car – with her feet completely off the ground… she also wanted to make sure i wasn’t going to go all hank aaron on the spider and send him flying through the air – as that would be flying through the air in HER direction… i assured her that it would be fine… (the spider had to have been thinking “lady! we both know you’re going to kill me, just do it and get it over with!”)… we finally agreed on the plan, everyone was ready… it was go time… i got the broom into attack position… slowly approached the target… took aim… and swung the broom knocking the piece of wood to the ground… but he didn’t run the way i expected him to!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! what the hell happened??? this was the most thought out plan ever!! i expected him to go with the momentum of the broom and wood and run to the left… but he ran to the right, falling on to the ground between two pieces of scrap wood… i quickly used the broom to smash the two pieces together and squishing him between them…. and it was over… he was dead… my heart was racing…. my daughter’s jaw hung open… i just stood there in awe of the chaotic scene that just occurred – and somehow, all turned out fine… then it was time to get back to work on the sofa…

i sanded it and then stained it… here it is after one coat of stain:

after i took that picture, i flipped the sofa over so i could stain the under side… so where you see the cross boards are not stained in the pic above – they are stained in the finished product… well, the ALMOST finished product…

i made this awesome sofa, but i can’t decide what to do with cushions… i thought i was completely in love with a color/style i saw at home goods… but i bought a pillow to try it out at home…

i’m not in love with it… so we returned the pillow and are back to square one… i felt like that color (a sorta greenish gray) would compliment the interior quite well – essentially extending the colors from the living room out to the patio… but the pillows – as cute as they were in the store – just didn’t pop enough for me… but i don’t want a busy pattern… and don’t want boring beige… so i’m stuck… part two of this project will be when i finally make a decision on cushions and can take a REAL “after” picture…
