hand towel racks…

i absolutely hate the little silver rings for hanging hand towels…. they just look so cheap… and ugly….

(the picture was taken during the walkthrough – thus the green tape on the cabinets… also, please ignore the fact that you can clearly see the doorway to narnia in this picture…)

i hate the chrome finish anyway – but the chrome plus the rings = yuck! so… my solution was to build some little shelves and attach hooks…. not sure i’m in love with this idea, but i already like it better than the stupid rings…

here’s a closer view of each of them…

and of the hooks….

to make these, i just took a 1×6 board and cut three 8 1/2″ pieces… then took a 1×2 trim piece and cut an 8 1/2″ piece…. i used the kreg jig to attach two of the 1×6 pieces together to create my backing… then used the kreg again to attach the shelf (you can see the two holes in the picture above)… i used the nail gun to attach the trim to the shelf… i stained them with a coat of dark walnut and then followed it up with a coat of weathered oak… and finally attached the hook…

one thing that i didn’t think about before starting this was that the screws that came with the hooks were intended to go into the wall… so they were about 1 1/4″ screws – much larger than my 3/4″ wood… so i had to make a quick run to lowe’s to get shorter screws…

i also grabbed these coke tab looking keyhole hangers to mount the towel holders to the wall….

the keyhole hangers are super easy to work with… i really like these better than d-rings…

we’ll see if these grow on me… and whether i can find better things to put on the shelves… but again, better than the ugly chrome rings – so i’m happy (kinda)…
