custom-made 20ft curtains (and some shorter ones)…

i can’t sew… or should i say, i COULDN’T sew… that was until my awesome and amazing mother came to visit me in january…

well before we even broke ground on the house – and while the ex-boyfriend and i were still together – i started working on a design ideas book with my daughter… and, of course, flooded my pinterest page with ideas… and once i was 100% sure of an idea – i bought it… because i would rather spread the cost of that stuff over the six months it took to build the house – rather than wait until we get in and be bombarded with everything and therefore, not be able to afford any design pieces…

so naturally, when i saw the perfect fabric for the breakfast area curtains, i ordered it! (well, i sent it to my mom and bff to get their opinions first… then, with their blessings, i ordered it)… (here’s the fabric from joann’s)… when i got the email confirmation that the fabric had shipped, i showed it to my daughter… but mr. nosy-pants looked over my shoulder and expressed his disdain for my pattern choice… he said, “you aren’t buying that, are you??”… oh baby, it is not only bought and paid for, but it is on the way here as we speak! i simply said, “yeah”… he offered his unsolicited opinion saying, “that is the ugliest pattern i’ve ever seen”… ever?? really?? because he was like 50 years old… and that is a long time… and to go through that much of your life having never seen anything uglier than this?? well… he must have lived a very beautiful life… because this pattern is pretty awesome….

so… back to my mother’s visit in january… she sewed the curtains for the formal dining room (here’s the fabric we used in the formal dining room) and the breakfast area (yes, using the “ugly” fabric i chose)… and i’m so in love with how awesome they look… although, i didn’t know enough about the process to order the correct amount of fabric for the breakfast area curtains… so, my mom could only make three of the panels… i had to make the fourth myself… and… that was a little crazy… i was so nervous… and she wasn’t there to walk me through it… she was already back in sunny south florida – and i’m here, alone with my sewing machine and just enough fabric for that last panel… and the fabric was running low in stock on joann’s website… so if i mess this up – i’m screwed! but… my momma taught me right… and i was able to make that last panel…

one of the things i fell in love with instantly was the idea of two-story curtains… the now ex-boyfriend shot this down immediately… he said it was frivolous and stupid… mind you, these curtains wouldn’t move to cover the windows… they’d be purely decorative… precisely the reason he hated the idea! “why have curtains that don’t move?!” what a silly, silly man… “because they’re impressive and add drama – and they’re beautiful”… “we’re not doing that,” he’d say in a very dismissive tone…

well… guess what, honey buns! now that you’re gone, i have those fantabulous two-story curtains… and i LOVE them! and you know what? they don’t move! nope, they just sit there looking all impressive and dramatic… just like i knew they would… although, i’ll admit that this was a diy project that i only did half way… i made the 20′ curtains (because my awesome and amazing mother taught me how to sew when she was here in january… and here is the fabric i used from fabric.com)…. but, i couldn’t hang them… i have no shame when i say that i just couldn’t do the height associated with getting them up there… i MIGHT have been able to get up there… and i MIGHT have even been able to take the tools up there with me… but there was no way i would feel comfortable balancing on that ladder – so high up there – and actually DOING anything…. so, i hired a handyman that lives in a neighboring subdivision… and it was worth every penny…

although, i will say that he gave me the strangest look when i tried to explain to him that the curtains won’t move… they are just for decoration… (gah! he and my ex-boyfriend… what is with these guys?!)… and i’m sure he was even less impressed when i gave him a bathroom towel bar on which to hang these immovable curtains… but seriously! if they aren’t going to move, why would i install an ugly bar all the way across…. i just needed something a couple feet wide… and a towel bar was the perfect fit… whatever! i’m a genius and these men just don’t see it!

by the time i got moved into the house, the boyfriend was gone from our lives… so it is a shame he never got to see how awesome the two-story curtains are – or how perfect these “ugliest pattern ever” curtains in the breakfast area are…
