hey kids! grandma and grandpa are coming!

time to get the guest room ready – and the “to-do” list ready!

my mom and step-dad are amazing! really, they both are… they are not only a great team, but they are great individually… before they came to visit over spring break, my mother instructed me to “make a list” of everything i want to get done while they are here… she said to put it all on the list and they’ll get through as much as they can…

let me tell you, this was no vacation for them… it was all hard work… from the time they woke up (which was hours before me!)… to the time they went to bed (which was only slightly before me)… seriously, my step-dad wakes up at 4:00AM or 5:00AM… he would confirm his “list” for the next day before he went to bed each night… that way, he could get to work while the rest of the house’s inhabitants enjoy more hours of sweet, sweet slumber…

in preparation of their visit, i researched the ceiling fans that we had in some rooms in the house… (we didn’t get them in every room because it was so much extra for the builder to do it – and i figured that fans, i could do any time)… i wanted the same fans throughout house (so that it wasn’t apparent that i went the cheap route and didn’t have the builder install them… i mean, i’m cheap, but everyone doesn’t need to know that!)… so i went through all the paperwork they gave me with the house, and found them! the Kichler 52″ Sterling Manor 5 Blade Ceiling Fan (i got the brushed nickel with oak blades from wayfair.com)… i also ordered GlideRite 1.375-inch Satin Nickel Square Cabinet Knobs for the kitchen cabinets from overstock.com

also on the “to-do” list was installing speakers on the patio, wainscoting on the stairs, organize the garage, and tons of other stuff… and let me tell you, these two are workhorses! they got so much done! between the two of them, they got almost everything on the list done – as well as extra things i didn’t even have on the list! my step-dad didn’t like the super long pull chains hanging from the ceiling fan in the middle of the living room… so he cut them and installed a rheostat to control the fan and light in there… (we feel so fancy now!)…

and… in addition to installing the speakers outside, he even picked up a receiver from a friend of his so that i wouldn’t have to buy one! his friend was getting rid of it because he purchased a newer one… so… the old one – that still works perfectly – is now fueling the sweet soul music that graces my back patio… here they are relaxing after a hard day of work – and hey, notice the speaker mounted up there…

you might also notice the fan in the above picture… yep, he also installed two fans on the back patio! the builder put lights out there, but had it wired so that we could install fans later… so, while he was here, my step-dad installed the two fans and synched them on the same remote control – which he mounted just inside the door… (did i mention how fancy we feel now??)… when heading out there, you can just grab the remote control on your way out – turn the lights on/off or dim/brighten – and control the speed of the fans – both of them!

he also mounted the tv’s on the wall and hid the cables behind the drywall… he just drilled holes and then fed the cables through until he could pull them out at the bottom by the outlet… it looks so nice with the tv’s mounted, but no ugly cords hanging down…

these two… seriously! they even set up two of these work benches in the garage and organized EVERYTHING in the garage… although, i’ll admit that there were times after they left that i’d call my mom and say, “i’m looking for (various item that only she knows where to find)”…

her organization skills are impeccable… sadly, that was not a skill she passed on to me – and certainly not to her grandkids… i have, unfortunately, broken the cycle of the highly organized…
